Gene: [09^/IREB1] iron-responsive element, binding protein for; aconitate hydratase (aconitase);

FUN

[1] In the structure of mRNA of ferritin (in 5'-UTL region) and transferrin receptor (in 3'-UTL region), a special regulatory region is differentiated according to its functional characteristics. This region is referred to as IRE (Iron-Responsive Element); it is capable to bind reversibly (through the oxidation/reduction of SH-groups) the cytoplasmic iron-containing IRE-dependent protein. At this stage, the protein affects the translation of ferritin mRNA and the stability of transferrin receptor mRNA thus appearing to be a key element in the regulation of intracellular iron homeostasis.
[2] The reaction catalyzed: citrate = cis-aconitate + H(2)O."
